Verbal reasoning tests - a noddy's guide
Verbal aptitude tests are psychometric instruments that measure at 3 levels of difficulty
- Verbal ability - can the candidate read and understand basic written information? For example a blue-collar test.
- Verbal reasoning ability - can the candidate understand and make decisions based on written information? For example a mid-level test.
- Verbal critical reasoning ability - can the candidate make inferences and decisions based on complex written information? For example a graduate/managerial test.
Candidates are presented with verbal information and are required to evaluate statements about the information and decide whether they are true, false or whether it is impossible to say. Ability tests are often used online for pre-selection purposes alongside online personality tests. Paper & pencil tests are often used alongside assessment centre exercises to determine a candidate's overall suitability.
